Adding and Removing Devices

Adding or removing a lock, thermostat, or static-code property updates your bill through Stripe proration — except during your free trial, when adding devices doesn’t charge you anything.

Normal proration

Once you’re past your trial and on a paid subscription, adding or removing a device updates your bill right away. Stripe prorates the change against your current billing cycle — you’re charged or credited for the remaining days at the new device count, rather than waiting for your next invoice to catch up.

How a change moves you between tiers

Lock pricing is graduated (see How pricing works), so adding or removing locks can shift which tier your devices fall into. Only the devices that cross into a new tier are billed at that tier’s rate — your existing devices keep the rate they already had.

For example, going from 10 to 11 SmartThings locks doesn’t move all 11 to the $3/device rate. The original 10 stay at $4/device; only the new 11th lock bills at $3/device. Removing works the same way in reverse: drop from 11 back to 10 and you simply lose that $3 unit — the remaining ten were always billed at $4.

The trial exception

While you’re on your 14-day trial, adding devices does not trigger a proration charge. Proration is turned off specifically during the trial, so you can connect more locks or thermostats without producing a surprise mid-trial bill. Full billing — at whatever device count you’ve reached — resumes normally once the trial ends.

Removing devices during the trial similarly has no billing effect, since nothing has been charged yet.
