How to Connect an Airbnb Property to GuestsKey

Step-by-step guide for Airbnb hosts to automate smart-lock guest codes with GuestsKey — using Hospitable Connect for free, with no PMS subscription required.

Most smart-lock automation tools assume you're running a paid property-management system — OwnerRez, Hospitable, Guesty. If you're an Airbnb host who manages listings straight from the Airbnb app, that assumption leaves you out: either pay for a PMS you don't otherwise need, or keep texting door codes by hand.

GuestsKey closes that gap with Hospitable Connect — a free, Airbnb-only connection path that lets you automate guest codes without buying a Hospitable (or any other) PMS subscription. This guide walks through exactly how to connect an Airbnb property, what happens automatically once you do, and how to verify the whole thing before your next check-in.

What Hospitable Connect Is (and Isn't)

Hospitable Connect is a direct, Airbnb-only integration channel. GuestsKey is an approved Connect vendor, which means you can authorize your Airbnb account to GuestsKey through Hospitable's secure flow without subscribing to Hospitable's PMS.

A few things to be clear about up front:

  • It's Airbnb-only. Every listing and reservation that comes through Connect is an Airbnb one. If you also host on Vrbo or Booking.com directly, those won't flow through this path — you'd sync them through a supported PMS instead.
  • It's free. There's no Hospitable subscription and no plan upgrade required to use Connect with GuestsKey. You pay only for GuestsKey itself (per lock).
  • It imports the listings you own. Connect brings in the Airbnb listings where you're the listing owner. If you're only a co-host on someone else's listing, that listing won't import — that's expected, not a bug.

If you're a Hospitable PMS customer already, you don't need Connect at all — you'd use the direct Hospitable integration instead. Connect is specifically the path for Airbnb hosts who aren't paying for a PMS.

What you'll need before you start

  • An Airbnb account you own the listings on (not co-host only).
  • A supported smart lock that's online — either a SmartThings hub lock (Z-Wave/Zigbee) or a Seam-supported Wi-Fi lock (Schlage, Yale, August, Kwikset, Lockly, igloohome, TTLock).
  • About ten minutes, and a phone or laptop you can complete the Airbnb authorization on.

Step-by-Step: Connecting Your Airbnb Account

Step 1: Create your GuestsKey account

Start a 14-day GuestsKey trial. A credit card is required to start the trial; you can cancel any time before it ends to avoid charges. Once you're in, head to the onboarding wizard — it's the guided setup that walks you through connecting a booking source and your locks.

Step 2: Choose Airbnb / Hospitable Connect as your booking source

In the wizard's integrations step, pick the Airbnb (Hospitable Connect) option. GuestsKey creates a Connect customer record tied to your account behind the scenes and generates a secure, one-time authorization link.

Step 3: Authorize your Airbnb account

GuestsKey hands you off to Hospitable Connect's authorization screen, where you log in to Airbnb and approve the connection. This is the only place your Airbnb credentials are entered — they go to Airbnb's own login, not to GuestsKey.

One thing to watch

The authorization link is time-limited — it expires about five minutes after it's generated. If you get distracted and it stops working, just restart the connect step in the wizard to get a fresh link. Nothing is lost.

Step 4: Let your listings import

As soon as you authorize, Hospitable Connect activates the channel and starts handing your Airbnb listings to GuestsKey. Each listing you own becomes a property in your GuestsKey dashboard automatically — you don't add them by hand.

Two normal things to expect:

  • A brand-new listing can take a little while to appear. Connect re-syncs listings periodically, so a listing you just created on Airbnb may show up on a short delay rather than instantly.
  • Your existing and upcoming bookings come in on connection. GuestsKey pulls the reservations already on your calendar when you connect — you don't have to wait for the next booking for the system to know about your current guests.

Step 5: Map each property to its lock

For each imported property, choose which smart lock it controls. If you connected a SmartThings account, you'll pick the location and lock device; if you connected locks through Seam, you'll pick from your discovered devices. This is the link that tells GuestsKey which door to put each guest's code on.

Step 6: Turn on guest automation

Enable guest-code automation per property and choose how codes are generated — the last four digits of the guest's phone number, or a random code — and the code length your lock supports. That's the last switch. From here it runs itself.

What Happens Automatically After You Connect

Once a property is connected and automation is on, every Airbnb booking flows through the same hands-off pipeline:

Booking arrives

A new Airbnb reservation comes in through Connect. GuestsKey reads the guest's check-in and check-out times in the property's local timezone.

Code is scheduled

A unique guest code is generated and scheduled — set to activate at check-in and expire at checkout, on the right lock, automatically.

Changes keep up

If the guest changes dates or cancels, GuestsKey updates or removes the code to match. You don't touch the lock app.

No more copying codes between Airbnb and a lock app. No more "did I remember to program that code?" the night before a check-in.

The Shared Front Door Case (Duplexes, Fourplexes, Small Inns)

This is where most automation breaks, and it's the single biggest reason an Airbnb host reaches for GuestsKey instead of relying on Airbnb's own setup.

Airbnb does not let you share one lock across multiple listings. Airbnb's native smart-lock support assumes a strict one-listing-to-one-lock relationship — there's no way to point two listings at the same physical device. So the moment your properties share a front door, Airbnb's built-in path simply has no answer for you.

And plenty of real setups share a door: a duplex where both units enter through the same entry, a fourplex, a small inn, a basement suite under the main house. With naive automation, two different codes get pushed to one lock and collide — the lock's duplicate-PIN protection kicks in, and the integration falls apart.

GuestsKey handles a shared door natively. You can map more than one property to the same lock, and the system reconciles the codes for that door instead of fighting over the slot. The case that trips everything else up — the same guest (same phone number) books both units for the same stay — is handled cleanly: the code is generated once, adopted across both bookings, and lives on the shared front door for the combined stay. One guest, one code, one door, no collision.

If you run anything other than a clean one-listing-one-lock setup, this is the difference between a working integration and an evening of debugging.

How to Verify It Before Your Next Check-In

Don't wait for a real guest to find out it works. Confirm the chain end to end:

  1. Check your properties imported. Open the GuestsKey dashboard — every Airbnb listing you own should be listed as a property. (Remember: co-host-only listings won't appear, and a freshly-created listing may lag.)
  2. Confirm each property is mapped to a lock and shows the lock online.
  3. Look at an upcoming booking. Open a reservation and confirm a guest code is scheduled with activation at check-in and expiry at checkout, in the property's local time.
  4. Spot-check the code on the lock. Once a code has activated, verify it appears on the physical lock (via the lock's own app) and that the digits match what GuestsKey shows.

If all four line up, you're done — the next guest gets a working code with no action from you.

Frequently Hit Questions

  • Why not just use Airbnb's built-in lock support? The biggest reason is shared doors: Airbnb assumes one lock per listing and won't let you share a single lock across multiple listings. If you run a duplex, fourplex, small inn, or any setup where listings share an entry, Airbnb's native path can't handle it — GuestsKey can. You also get cleaner codes, one-time vendor keys, and a proactive pre-check-in backup layer that Airbnb's built-in automation doesn't offer.
  • Do I need a Hospitable subscription? No. Connect is free and Airbnb-only; you pay only for GuestsKey per lock.
  • What if I have zero listings after connecting? You're likely a co-host rather than the listing owner on those Airbnb listings — Connect only imports listings you own. Reconnect with the owner account, or map the lock under whoever owns the listing.
  • What about Vrbo or Booking.com? Those don't come through the Airbnb Connect path. To automate them, sync them through a supported PMS like OwnerRez or Hospitable, which GuestsKey also integrates with.
  • My new Airbnb listing isn't showing up. Give it a little time — Connect re-syncs listings on a schedule, so new listings can appear on a short delay rather than the instant you create them.

Get Started

Connecting an Airbnb property to GuestsKey takes about ten minutes and costs nothing beyond your per-lock GuestsKey plan. Start your 14-day trial — a credit card is required to start, and you can cancel before it ends to avoid charges — then pick Airbnb (Hospitable Connect) in the wizard.
